The Birding Club

Brief

A spontaneous immersive art installation at Symbiosis Gathering in 2013, a festival of 16,000 people, made without being asked for by anyone.

Approach

Subversive signage led festival-goers off their route to a stage, where bird watching guides narrated the viewing of costumed psychedelic birds, each dancing to its own soundtrack. Nobody broke character.

Outcome

A couple of hundred people each time we ran it, over a handful of outings, and it has since been staged again including at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
